The story

Problem, approach, and the outcome

About the client

The client is a US digital-asset trading platform building a next-generation exchange for active retail and prosumer traders. For a trading venue, the experience of the order book and the speed of execution are the product.

They wanted to stand apart from commodity exchanges with an immersive, data-rich front end backed by genuine on-chain settlement, rather than an off-chain ledger dressed up as decentralised.

The challenge

Traders expect live markets that never stutter, but streaming real-time candlesticks and depth into a browser and a VR environment while executing settlement on-chain pulls in two opposite directions. The front end has to feel instant while the chain moves at block time.

The earlier build leaned on a custodial off-chain matching engine, which undermined the whole non-custodial promise and left users trusting an opaque ledger. That was the credibility gap the platform most needed to close.

They needed on-chain order execution that stayed cheap and fast enough for real trading, without sacrificing the responsiveness that keeps active traders on a venue. Performance and genuine on-chain settlement had to hold at the same time.

Our approach

We built the settlement layer in Solidity with a gas-optimised order and execution path, so trades clear on-chain in a single confirmation rather than routing through a custodial engine. Keeping settlement on-chain is what makes the non-custodial claim real rather than cosmetic.

The front end streamed live market data into TradingView-grade candlestick charts and a WebGL trading floor, with Web3.js wiring wallet-connected execution straight to the contracts. Decoupling the real-time data feed from on-chain settlement let the interface stay instant while the chain settled at its own pace.

We threat-modelled the execution path for front-running and re-entrancy, covered it with invariant tests, and instrumented on-chain monitoring before mainnet. The exchange reached production with settlement users could verify for themselves.

Results
  • Real-time candlestick markets across web and VR
  • On-chain settlement in a single confirmation
  • Genuinely non-custodial execution, no off-chain engine
  • Execution path threat-modelled and invariant-tested pre-mainnet
